The History of Pest Control

Pest control is as old as agriculture itself, as there has been a need to keep crops free from pests, rodents and anything else that would eat or steal valuable food stores.

The first strategy employed was burning weeds and crops or plowing them under to kill larger competing herbivores, such as crows and other seed eating birds. We have a long history of agricultural techniques such as crop rotation, companion planting, intercropping, mixed cropping, and the selective breeding of pest-resistant cultivars.

In more modern times, following the growing trend to be concerned about animal welfare, humane pest control and deterrence has gained ground using animal psychology rather than extermination. In rural areas, the use of firearms for pest control is very common. Airguns, BB guns, pellet guns are particularly popular for control of small pests such as rats, rabbits and squirrels, because they are more useable in sensitive areas such as the garden, the yard, and in and around the farm house.

Chemical pesticides date way back, more than 4,500 years, when the Sumerians used their own form of insecticides: sulfur compounds. Ancient Indian texts, also mention the use of poisonous plants for pest control some 4000 years ago. Chemical pest control went world wide in the 18th and 19th centuries due to the introduction of the insecticides pyrethrum and derris. In the 20th century synthetic insecticides, such as DDT, and herbicides further spread the use of chemical pesticides. Chemical pest control is still the predominant type of pest control today.

But here in the Salt Lake City area of Utah, the primary pest control for larger animals and rodents is trap-and-release, then seal the structure. That's what Animal Removal & Prevention does.
